Protecting Consumers

Available to all retailers who use The 3rd Man screening service

Consumers need to be protected if they are to continue to shop online. There appears to be a general feeling amongst many customers that the Internet is not a safe place to shop. This is not the case. However, the introduction of new security measures, such as 3D Secure, may mean that cardholding customers will soon be liable for transactions performed using their details. This is a manageable situation, but only if retailers actively engage their customers and create a safe and secure environment in which to transact.

Retailers should state that they seek to provide a safe environment for their customers as well as themselves. That is why they should:

  • Screen data for potential fraud
  • Report attempted fraud to all participating card issuers upon detection.

This retailer-led support is designed to drive consumer awareness and in turn create the incentive for banks to accept data feeds and advise consumers as appropriate.

The 3rd Man offers branding that may be used by retailers on their website that promotes “security for the retailer... security for the consumer”, “e-commerce is safe as long as you transact with your eyes open!”

There are three levels of integration:

  1. Show logo only and link logo to information script (completely passive)
  2. Show logo and have active look-up to registered user of logo (this will perform an active look-up to our servers and reference your retailer registration detail – i.e it proves you are the registered user of the logo
  3. Show logo and offer customer agreement to receive active fraud alerts in the event that their details are used fraudulently.
